The sprawling city of Shanghai is the largest city in the whole of China. It is a modern city, with many major developments. Split in half by the Huangpu River, Shanghai is often said to be divided into two main areas – Pudong and Puxi. Pudong is the newer part of the city, filled with buildings that reach for the skies, and Puxi is the older and more historical part of Shanghai.
There are two major airports in Shanghai; Pudong is the main gateway for international travellers, and Hongqiao has mainly domestic services. The city can be accessed by rail, with the major stations including Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, Shanghai West Railway Station, and Shanghai South Railway Station. Roads are congested in and around the mega city. To move around Shanghai, some areas are walkable. Where distances prevent walking, there is an extensive bus system, as well as a metro. Taxis are widely available. Novel contraptions comprising a motorbike and sidecar are popular with tourists. Ferries can also be used to cross the river, and boat trips are a great way to take in the Shanghai waterfront. Bus tours of the city help you to hit all the key tourist attractions with ease.
The beautiful and breath taking gardens of Suzhou are within easy reach of Shanghai.
Within the city, major places of interest include Yuyuan Gardens, The Bund, and the pretty French Concession area. Happy Valley theme park is great for all the family.
