Port Hedland is situated in Western Australia, within the Pilbara Region. It is the world's biggest export port. The bulk of exported materials is iron ore, with a significant amount of salt and copper also being exported. Despite its very work orientated nature, the area is home to some nice attractions.
There are many mangroves around the town where you can go fishing and crabbing. The beaches are pleasant, and the water presents excellent swimming at High Tide. You must be very cautious, however, as saltwater crocodiles and sharks live in the area. Also, in the summer months, the waters are home to box jellyfish and other dangerous sea creatures.
You may be able to take a tour of various companies' operations in the port, though these change from time to time. Contact the Visitors Centre to discuss your options. Dalgety House Museum and the Don Rhodes Mining Museum both offer an interesting couple of hours. There are various exhibits in the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery.
