Phuket is Thailand's largest island, though with its large size it is often very easy to forget that one is actually on an island. It is a very popular tourist destination, offering lots for visitors.
In the Andaman Sea, Phuket has some terrific beaches. Glorious sands meet sparkling waters, and there are ample opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and a variety of water sports. Snorkeling and diving trips are a great way to see the abundance of marine life and sea creatures that inhabit the coastal areas. Vendors attempt to ply their wares along the sands. Some beaches are packed with people, but you can still find quieter areas.
Some of the more well-known areas include Patong, the busiest area by far with a pumping night life, Kata, which offers good surfing, Karon, the area's second busiest beach, and Phuket Town.
Trips to other islands are popular excursions from Phuket, with Koh Phi Phi, the Similian Islands, Coral Island, ad Racha Yai being amongst some of the places one can choose to see.
Phuket is scattered with lovely temples to get your cultural fill.
To get to Phuket, you can fly into Phuket's international airport, which also serves domestic destinations, take a boat from another island or mainland area, or travel by bus from various other parts of Thailand. There is no rail service to Phuket. A train can be taken to Surat Thani, on the opposite coast, followed by a bus journey, to reach Phuket.
Within Phuket, there are not so many public transport options, although many hotels do offer shuttle services. There are many taxis and tuk tuks waiting to offer a personalised service, although prices can be a little on the high side.
With a high volume of visitors, Phuket offers the full range of accommodation options. Luxury five star hotels and backpacker digs are available with everything else in between. An array of different foods is offered, including Thai specialities and international favourites. The night scene is lively and diverse.
