Norfolk Island Flights Guide

Norfolk Island, AustraliaNorfolk Island sits in the South Pacific Ocean and is an Australian territory. It lies around 1,000 kilometres from New Zealand's Auckland and 1,600 kilometres away from Brisbane and Sydney.

Used as a penal colony for the British, it later saw an influx of people from the Pitcairn Islands. Most residents today can trace their ancestry back to these Pitcairn Islanders.

There are various former convict sites sprinkled across the island; they are in various states of decay so heed prohibited entry signs for safety. Visit the local distilley, Norfolk Island Liquors, and enjoy some free samples, or check out the local brewery.

In Burnt Pine you can find numerous shops selling a wide variety of merchandise. There are great savings to be made on mainland prices due to the island having a tax and duty free regime. A large outdoor market sets up shop every Sunday morning. Local products include items made using the Norfolk Pine.

The island is known for its delicious and fresh seafood dishes. Traditional local fare is largely based on Polynesian cuisine. Other type of food, including Italian and Chinese, are also available.

There are an abundance of places to stay.

Even though it is an Australian territory, it operates a separate immigration system. Even Australians cannot enter freely and are subject to immigration controls. Citizens of Australia and New Zealand are granted a 30 day visa on arrival, but other nationalities must arrange a multi-entry Australian visa before visting Norfolk Island.

The island is served by one airport, IATA code NLK, which operates flights to Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland. The best way to get around is with a rental car or scooter; there is no public transport on Norfolk Island.
