Malaysia's Langkawi is a group of islands in the stunning Andaman Sea. They lie around 30 kilometres away from the north west coast of mainland Malaysia, and can also be accessed from the south of Thailand. The main island for visitors is Pulau Langkawi, which offers chilled out beaches, a varied dining scene, and a combination of energic and relaxed night life. With a duty free regime, alcohol, perfumes, and other products can be found for very reasonable prices.
Langkawi International Airport serves a variety of Asian destinations. Boats connect Langkawi to Malaysia's Penang, Kuala Kedah, and Kuala Perlis, as well as Saturn and Koh Lipe in Thailand. With little public transport, most people rent a scooter, bicycle, or car. Taxis are available, but can really rack up the costs.
As well as enjoying the beaches, get out and about and see some of the local delights. A popular attraction is the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls. It is also known as Seven Wells because of the seven naturally formed pools in which one can bathe. There are walking trails in the area, and you can enjoy some very scenic views.
The Laman Padi Rice Garden is peaceful and pretty and allows visitors to learn more about the importance of rice farming. Eagle Square is also rather lovely. It has gorgeous landscaped areas, small ponds, bridges, terraces, and the central highlight is, as the name suggests, a massive eagle statue. Legend Garden is another pretty place. You can venture up Langkawi's tallest mountain, Gunung Raya, for breath taking vistas.
Underwater World is great for kids. Oriental World is interesting, with a variety of restaurants and activities. You can watch a snake charmer tame his angry snakes, listen to traditional music, have your palm read and your portrait painted, ride atop a magnificent elephant, watch jugglers, and more.
You can tour the mangroves, take island hopping tours, go sailing and kayaking, trek in the jungle, play golf, snorkel, scuba dive, and more in Langkawi.
The main beaches include Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. Pantai Kok offers a more intimate and isolated beach.
