Ayers Rock Flights Guide

Ayers Rock, AustraliaAyers Rock, also known as Uluru, is one of Australia's, if not the world's, star natural attractions. Within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory, it is a massive rock formation made of just the one single rock. The Olgas, a fantastic range of rock domes, are also in the same area. The native name means Earth Mother.

The area is known as the Red Centre because of the spectacularly breath taking natural colours of the rocks. As daylight starts to fade and the sun starts to set, the normal reddish brown of the rocks appear to change to a bluey violet colour. Try and see both a sunset and a sunrise at Ayers Rock; at sunrise it is fiery red.

Ayers Rock stands a staggering 348 metres above the plains, and its circumference is over nine kilometres. It is immense.

Ayers Rock is a very sacred place for the Aboriginies and climbing the rock is strongly discouraged. The Aboriginal people state that the climb follows the same footsteps of their forefathers, the Mala men, en route to the top for ceremonies. They believe that climbing the rock shows great disrespect. They also believe that the surrounding areas are home to many ancestral spirits and beings.

Visit the Cultural Centre to learn more about the Aborigines and how Ayers Rock and the land surrounding it was returned to the native tribes.

Wthin the National Park there is a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are also some excellent hiking trails to fully appreciate the raw magnificence of the area.

Accommodation and supplies can be found in the nearby village of Yulara. There is a wide choice of places to eat, drink, and sleep.

Ayers Rock Airport is situated around 15 kilometres away from the rock. Flights are available from Cairns, Sydney, Perth, and Alice Springs. Several tours are available, and it is also possible to drive to the area. From Alice Springs it is around 450 kilometres. To get from Yularu to Ayers Rock can be tricky without your own transport or being part of a tour.
