The cradle of Western civilization, Greece's Athens is steeped in mythological tales and home to many historical sites. It is a large city, but many of the main places of interest can be found within a relatively small area, making Athens very easy to explore. The best times to visit Athens are in spring and autumn.
Within the city there are 12 hills, each offering excellent views of Athens in all its glory. Three mountains flank the city on three sides, providing a great backdrop.
The famous and ancient Acropolis sits proudly on top of a hill. Known as the High City, it is home to marvelous marble temples that pay homage to the goddess Athena, after whom the city was named. The Parthenon is one of the crowning jewels. At the bottom of the Acropolis lie the lovely historical areas of Thissio, Plaka, and Monastiraki.
The large Temple of Zeus was once the biggest temple in the whole of Greece. Today its stone columns stand proudly, defying the effects of time. The Roman Agora was a bustling and lively marketplace in its heyday. The Theater of Dionysus was the setting for many early performances by great writers; it was the birthplace of modern theatre.
The Ancient Agora used to be the heart of the city; today it lies mainly in ruins. However, two buildings remain – the Stoa of Attalos and the Hephaisteion.
Other places to see include Syntagma Square, the Kerameikos, and Panathinaiko Stadium.
Museums and galleries abound, and there are modern shopping areas, restaurants, bars, cafes, and many places to stay.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is a major gateway to the city. The main port is Piraeus. Trains and coaches also link Athens to other parts of Greece. Public transport within Athens is good; it includes trams, the metro, buses, trolleybuses, and local trains. Yellow taxis are widely available.
