Austria bursts with old-world charm. If you’ve ever seen a photo of a castle atop a misty mountain and wondered where on this earth could this magical place be, there is a good chance it was in Austria. The architecture is captivating and of intricate design, the landscapes bold and ethereal and the castles mind-blowing – if a castle can be such a thing.
Whether you spend your time in Vienna, Tyrol, Salzburg or elsewhere you’ll come away with a full heart and spirit – and thousands of photos.
Austria’s climate is best described as temperate, with summer temperatures that reach up to 30 degrees Celsius and winter brings freezing temperatures to some areas. Like other mountainous countries, temperatures vary as elevations do. This is a country that demands that you walk – a lot. Pack some sturdy high-quality shoes and layers of clothing that you can add or subtract as needed.
Vienna is a mesmerizing city, a place where ancient architecture meets arty modern apartment buildings that look as if a toddler assembled them. This is a city to drink in, to absorb by walking its streets. St. Stephen’s Cathedral or Steffl as the locals call it, is one of the most captivating churches in Europe. Tourists sometimes sit in its seats for hours, taking it all in and not wanting to move. The Schloss Schaumburg Castle cannot be missed; it has 1,441 rooms – though only 40 are open to the visiting public.
While Tyrol may not have as majestic a name as Vienna, it does have beauty that rivals it. The Royal Court Church is a brilliant example of gothic architecture that will stop you moving as you approach it, it is astounding its it presence and beauty. Then there is the Gothic Oriel or Golden Museum that has no fewer than 2657 copper tiles on its roof, or the alpine flower garden where over 400 varieties of the country’s natural flowers are on show.
Salzburg is a land of magical castles; you cannot believe that some of them are real as the mist rises and leaves them behind. The Festung Hohensalzburg Fortress looms large above it environs and it alone makes the trip to Salzburg worthwhile.
Austria is a land of regal architecture, exceptional food and wine and unsurpassed natural beauty. Walk its cities and hike its mountain trails to absorb its essence. Tourists usually make at least a second trip to Austria, if not a third.
