Air France is the national airline of France. It has it's headquarters at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport. It is a subsidiary of the Air France - KLM group. Amsterdam's Schiphol airport is also a hub of the combined group. The firm also owns a small low-cost carrier airline, Transavia, which operates out of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven, with plans to also operate out of Paris-Orly. In partnership with Dutch affiliate, Transavia, Air France is to launch a new charter/low-cost airline to be based at Paris-Orly Airport and to begin operations in spring 2007 with leisure route services in the Mediterranean and North Africa.
The airline is part of the Skyteam Alliance, which is the second largest airline alliance in the world with ten airlines from three continents and six pending members. SkyTeam calls itself the 'first alliance built around customer needs'. In 2005, SkyTeam was the world's best airline alliance, according to the readers of Global Traveler Magazine. Again in 2006, readers of Global Traveler Magazine rated SkyTeam as the best airline alliance. SkyTeam has two premium levels, Elite and Elite Plus, based on a customer's tier status in a member carrier's frequent flyer program. Business and First class were both given 4 stars out of 5 by Skytrax for combined quality of product/staff service in airport and onboard environments, and First class seating comfort and meals were given 5 out of 5.
Flying Blue is the frequent flyer program of Air France and KLM. In June 2005, the frequent flyer programs of Air France and KLM were combined to the Flying Blue program. Kenya Airways (partly owned by KLM), Aircalin (partly owned by Air France) is also a Flying Blue member. Points can be accruedn and spend flights and associated services of Air France-KLM. Flying Blue has four membership levels including, Ivory (Basic level), Silver (Skyteam Elite level), Gold (Skyteam Elite in USA, Elite Plus elsewhere) and Platinum (Skyteam Elite Plus level).
