Air Canada - Airline Information
Air Canada is Canada's largest airline and flag carrier, operating a fleet of over 340 aircraft (including Air Canada Jazz). The airline was founded in 1937 and has its headquarters in Montreal, Quebec. In 1987, Air Canada became the first airline in the world to have a non-smoking policy on all its fleet, and in 1989 became completely privatised. The Electronic ticket also made its debut in Canada when the airline began testing the service on selected Canadian routes and was phased in across Canada and on transborder routes in 1996. Air Canada was the first North American operator of the A340-300 and A340-500.
The airline provides scheduled and charter air transportation for passengers and cargo, flying passenger services to over 170 destinations, making it the worlds 14th largest airline. The airline won the title of ‘Best Airline in North America’ and the Best Airline in Canada’ in a survey of the readers of Global Traveler, a US based travel magazine in 2007.
Air Canada is one of the founding members of Star Alliance, which was formed in 1997 which is currently the worlds largest airline alliance. This frequent flyer program enables travellers to earn Aeroplan points when you fly one of the Star Alliance airlines.
Since December 2007, Air Canada has operated a non-stop flight from Sydney to Vancouver, thus making them the only operator to offer a non-stop flight between Canada and Australia. The direct flight also offers the traveller the added convenience of not having to transfer at an American airport and therefore avoids the needs to go through US Customs and Immigration procedures.
