Air Canada is Canada's largest airline and flag carrier, was founded in 1937 and has its headquarters based in Montrral, Quebec. In 1987, Air Canada became the first airline in the world to have a non-smoking policy on all its fleet, and in 1989 became completely privatised. The Electronic ticket also made its debut in Canada when the airline began testing the service on selected Canadian routes and was phased in across Canada and on transborder routes in 1996. Air Canada became the first airline in the world to offer all its customers in-seat telephone and email / web access on all of its aircraft. Air Canada was the first, and continues to be the only North American operator of the A340-300 and A340-500. The airline provides scheduled and charter air transportation for passengers and cargo to over 240 destinations around the world with over 90 destinations for passangers making ithe worlds 11th largest airline.
Air Canada is one of the founding members of Star Alliance, which was formed in 1997 which is currently the worlds largest airline alliance. This frequent flyer program enables travellers to earn Aeroplan points when you fly one of the Star Alliance airlines. The alliance has 17 member airlines flying to 855 airports across 155 countries, 650 lounges and 17 first-class member carriers from all around the world.
Air Canada has two to three classes on the majority of their routes. Most domestic services offer Executive Class and Economy, with international aircraft either offering (Executive First and Economy), (Executive First, Premium Economy and Economy) or (Premium Economy and Economy). Air Canada Jazz, the regional airline service offers connecting routes throughout Canada. Unlike the international service, Air Canada Jazz is a single economy class service, while Executive Class and Economy is offered on some of its routes. Skytrax quoted Air Canada's Business lounge in Vancouver as on North American standards by far the best product out there, and gave the airlines business class an overall ranking of 4 stars out of 5 for combined Quality of Product/Staff service in airport and onboard environments. On January 19, 2007, the airline was voted Best Airline in North America also according to Skytrax.
