Croatia's capital city of Zagreb is a lively city with a medieval heart. It is crammed with quaint architectural delights and cute cobblestone streets.
Zagreb International Airport sees many visitors arriving from various places all around Europe. It also serves domestic destinations. Most main European cities are linked to Zagreb by rail, and bus services provide an alternative way of travelling around Croatia and into Europe. Zagreb is easy to navigate by public transport, with a good system of buses, trains, and trams. Unusually for a capital city, there are not so many taxis.
A novel way to move between the lower and upper towns, and vice cersa, is with the historic funicular. Both areas offer lots for visitors to see and do. In addition to numerous attractions, the majority of restaurants and bars can also be found in the lower and upper towns.
Within the medieval upper town, the Old Town Gate is a shrine to the Virgin Mary. There is a sacred picture of Mary which is thought to have special properties, having been the only item to survive the ravaging great fire of 1731. There are two statues of Saint George in the upper town – one of him fighting the dragon and one after he has vanquished the great beast. For great views of the lower town head to Strossmayer Setaliste.
To chill out in lovely natural surroundings, visit one of Zagreb's sparkling lakes. Jarun Lake offers a shingle beach, lined with trendy bars. Bundek offers a more chilled out vibe and is a prime spot for a picnic or BBQ.
Zagreb's museums include Muzej Mimara, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Umjetnicki Paviljon, and the rather moving and unusual, some may say odd, Museum of Broken Relationships.
Maksimar Park and Zagreb Zoo are a hit with people of all ages.
