Xiamen is in the Chinese province of Fujian, and it sits by the coast. It is a modern city, although it has a long and varied history.
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport serves the area, with numerous international and domestic flights. Ferries sail to and from Kinmen. Xiamen is connected to Fuzhou, Hangzho, and Shanghai by the super fast Bullet Train. Sleeper trains travel between Xiamen and Guangzhou. Buses operate to various parts of the country. Whilst public transport is efficient, it can be difficult to use due to language barriers. Taxis are often a better option, and they are plentiful and cheap. Cycling is another good way to explore Xiamen.
One of the most visited ares is Gulangyu Island, which is is a charming and small island with some delightful colonial architecture. It has a really Bohemian atmosphere, with artists squirreling away in small nooks and crannies, people wandering around selling handicrafts and art work, and a variety of food sellers at every turn.
Yundang Lake offers a place of peaceful relaxation. Some of the buildings near to the lake operate a night time laser show. Another lovely place to enjoy some peace and quiet is Bailuzhou Park. Jiageng Park is a pretty memorial park, dedicated to the founder of the city's university.
Some other main sights in Xiamen include Nanputuo Temple, Music Square, Sunlight Rock, the Water Garden Expo Park, and Lam Soon Crocodile Farm.
Hulishan Fortress dates back to the late 1800s and show cases some great designs in the style of those from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Telescopes provide good views of the area.
The bustling night markets are a great experience, and the quaint traditional tea houses provide a good rest break.
The city has a vibrant, yet affordable, night life. Whilst in Xiamen, sample some of the local foods. To get you started, try oyster omlet, fish balls, glass noodles, spring rolls, shrimp and noodle soup, peanut soup, and crab porridge. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the local fare revolves around seafood.
