Trivandrum is the former name of the much lengthier Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian state of Kerala. It is often still referred to by its previous, and easier, name. It sits between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, near to low hills, and is a very popular holiday destination. It has a long and varied history that spans at least 1,000 years. It has a tropical climate and the driest months are between December and March.
Trivandrum International Airport operates direct flights to the Middle East, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, as well as several domestic destinations. The Central Railway Station is one of India's major stations, and the city is well linked by rail. It is also well connected by buses.
There are many inexpensive local buses in the city, and taxis are cheap and abundant. The roads are often very busy so driving a car and riding a scooter are not recommended – even walking across the road can pose problems in some places!
A major site in the city is the Sree Anantha Padmanabha Temple. It is one of India's oldest temples and is a very important place for Hindus. It combines Tamil and Kerala architecture, and is full of fabulous and intricate details. Nearby, you can see the wonderful East Fort and the interesting Ramanayar Palace Museum.
The large and looming Kerala Government Secretariat is a very distinctive landmark. The large Kanaka Kunnu Palace is a beautiful sight with lovely gardens.
Other places of interest include the Kuthimallikka Palace, Kowidar Palace, the zoo, Kerala Legislature Assembly Complex, and various museums and galleries. The surrounding areas also contain a number of fantastic places.
The nearest beaches are eight kilometres outside of the city. A favourite is Shanghumukham Beach.
Watch a Bollywood movie in the cinema, admire traditional Kathakali dancing, shop for super cheap clothes, try the local coconut water drink, gorge on delicious South Indian cuisine, and have a memorable time in Trivandrum.
