Cambodia's Siem Reap is best known for the nearby magnificent and ancient temples of Angkor. Most visitors have heard of Angkor Wat, the large and iconic temple, but few realise that there are actually many ancient buildings in the area that was a former capital city of the once powerful Khmer Kingdom.
Within Siem Reap you can visit the emotive and informative museum about landmines, and help to assist the local community whilst doing so. The large and sparkling Tonle Sap Lake is within easy reach, where you can take a boat ride amongst the floating villages and gardens. There is also a traditional cultural centre in the vicinity.
The area of Ankor is huge, containing many historic remnants in various states of preservation. It is recommended to take a couple of days to view the sights, starting with the smaller and lesser known, but still impressive and worthwhile, places, and lead up to the major features.
Take a walk along the Elephant Terrace and Leper Terrace and admire the many carvings. See where nature has won the battle at Ta Prohm, with walls literally crumbling amidst the sturdy tree roots. Trees have grown around the stones, creating a very wild and wonderful atmosphere. You can still see many fine details, however, in the stonework. Surrounded by jungle, this site is a must visit.
Admire the many faces of the Bayon. The gigantic faces watch over visitors from all directions. It is really spectacular.
Angkor Wat is the area's number one hit. It is an enormous temple complex, with various scenes depicted in the intricate carved walls. Climb inside for views of the stretching site and lose yourself in the many nooks and crannies.
Siem Reap's Pub Street is the main area for eating, drinking, and sleeping. You will also find a range of souvenirs, clothes, and trinkets for sale in the nearby market. The night life is fairly raucous.
Siem Reap has an airport, and buses and minivans connect the city to other major Cambodian towns and cities. It is also possible to use public transport to cross the land borders with Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.
