Saporro Flights Guide

Saporro, JapanAs Hokkaido's primary transportation hub, Sapporo is often used as a base for heading out into Japan's wild northern prefecture, Hokkaido. Frequently overlooked in favour of the tourist hubs Tokyo and Kyoto, vibrant Sapporo has more to offer tourists than meets the eye. Founded in the 19th-century, Sapporo is one of Japan's newest cities, with modern grid-layout streets and numerous public park spaces that reflect the West's increasing influence in Japan. In addition to being an easy city to navigate by foot, Sapporo offers a relatively cheap and very efficient subway system.

Sapporo's long stretches of coastline make it an excellent spot for seafood, particularly hairy crab and sushi. The city is also known for its miso ramen and soup curry, as well as dairy products, like milk, cheese and butter. You'll find a good selection of fruits, including honeydew, melon and strawberries, as well as meats like sausage, mutton, ham and beef.

Arguably one of Japan's most famous beers, Sapporo is well-known for its eponymous beer, which has been brewed in the city since 1891. A visit to the lovely 19th-century Sapporo Brewery and accompanying Botanical Gardens is an absolute must. The Sapporo Beer Museum offers free guided tours that explain the history of beer in Japan, along with a taste testing at the end. The German-style Beer Garden next to the museum is a good place to head afterwards if you're ready for more than a taste of this delicious brew.

There's also the Ishiya Chocolate Factory, where you can pick up Sapporo's famous white chocolate, “White Lovers”, as well as the pleasant flowers, trees and fountains in Odori Park. As a former Winter Olympics site, Sapporo is also famous for its ski resorts, and the interesting Sapporo Winter Sports Museum. After sunset, take the Mount Moiwa Ropeway to the summit of Mount Moiwa to see spectacular views over the city. If you happen to visit in February, the exciting Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) is not to be missed.

In the evening, the bars and restaurants of Susukino are as lively and colourful as anything you'll find in Tokyo or Osaka. Although the Japanese mafia, the yakuza, has a heavy presence in this area, it's generally safe for tourists.
