Santiago Flights Guide

Santiago, ChileSantiago de Chile, often abbreviated to just Santiago, is the capital city of South America's Chile. It is the cultural heart of the city, with many attractions to keep everyone busy. Its wonderful location means that it is easy to reach the Pacific coast and the soaring Andes. Indeed, it is entirely possible to spend the morning skiing on snowy slopes and then the afternoon soaking up the sun on heavenly sandy beaches!

Santiago Airport is the main way that people enter the city. It serves both domestic and global destinations. Buses connect Santiago to all major South American locations. It is also possible to access the city by car. When entering Chile by air, some nationalities must pay a visa fee. These include Australians, Canadians, people from the USA, and others. There are no charges when one enters by land. To get around there is a metro system and buses.

A main city sight is the main square, the Plaza de Armas. Here you can see the stunning national cathedral in all its glory. Another top attraction is the Metopolutano Park. The large and impressive Cerro San Cristobal statue is within the park, and you can take a cable car or funicular to the top for sweeping views. If you are feeling active, it is also possible to hike to the summit; hiking should take around one hour. Also within the park there is a botanical garden, a small zoo, children's play areas, and two swimming pools. Parque Forestal is another lovely city park.

La Moneda Palace is the President's residence. Interesting tours are available but they must be pre-booked. Underneath the palace you will find the Centro Cultural Palacio de la Moneda, a subterranean cultural centre with various exhibits, shops, and a cafe. Other interesting places in Santiago include the Palacio Cousino, La Chascona, and the Municipal Theatre. There are several historic churches, great examples of colonial architecture, numerous shopping areas, and a wide selection of museums and art galleries.

Santiago's night life is varied and lively, with a very strong jazz scene.
