San Jose Flights Guide

San Jose, USAFounded in the 18th-century, San Jose is California's oldest Spanish settlement. Recently, this city's former farms and green spaces have made way for restaurants, shops, high-tech computer firms, and housing developments. Today, San Jose is often described as the “Capital of Silicon Valley”, home to the headquarters of major tech companies, including Cisco Systems, eBay and Adobe Systems. This fast-growing city offers historic buildings, first-rate museums, and locals consider it to be one of the safest cities in America.

The city's downtown area is surprisingly small, making it easy to sightsee on foot. There's also a bus and light-rail system, which are convenient for quickly reaching places outside the downtown area. Some of the best dining, shopping and scenic strolling can be found along Santana Row, a modern interpretation of the traditional “Main St” concept, with residences, shops and restaurants. Dining options range from seafood and Japanese, to Italian and Mexican. San Pedro Square Farmer's Market is a nice place to pick up local and organic produce on Fridays and Saturdays. The city's nightlife district, SOFA (South of First Area), offers lively nightclubs, restaurants, galleries, as well as the historic California Theatre, one of the best-preserved examples of 1920s-era motion picture houses in the US.

Check out the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, which is listed as a California Historical Landmark. The church is home to some impressive artwork, in addition to a Bavarian glass skylight and stained glass murals. For museum buffs, there's the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, which houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in Western North America; as well as the Tech Museum of Innovation, which is one of America's foremost science and technology museums. Escape to nature on the Los Gatos Creek Trail, which winds along pretty ponds and parks; or visit the beautiful San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. Catch glimpses of the city's Spanish heritage at Plaza de Cesar Chavez and Peralta Adobe. For families, there's also California's Great America, a huge amusement park located 10 minutes from downtown.
