San Francisco Flights Guide

San Francisco, USAIn the US state of California, San Francisco is a major city and a popular tourist destination. The heart of flower power and incredibly laid back, San Francisco offers something for all. The setting for many movies, don't be surprised if you have feelings of déjà vu when walking around! The city is known for being liberal, and has a large gay community.

Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, and is one of the most well known bridges in the world. Nearby, you will find the Palace of Fine Arts, housed within the Presidio former military post. A top San Francisco experience is to ride the famous cable cars up the hill between Market Street and Fisherman's Wharf. Climb Telegraph Hill for great views and to see the Coit Tower. Alamo Square Park also affords great views, and is the area where you will find the row of Victorian homes known as the Painted Ladies.

Lombard Street is one of the crookedest streets in the world, with its twists and turns being rather quite dizzying! With many different neighbourhoods, aim to visit at least a few different parts of the large city. Haight Asbury was a centre for the hippie movement – free love still abounds here! Chinatown is a lively area, with great food. Museums are liberally sprinkled across the city.

Top trips include to the notorious Alcatraz Prison and pretty Angel Island.

San Francisco International Airport is one of the largest airports in the world. Other airports that serve the city include Oakland International and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International, both of which mainly operate budget flights. Long distance buses and trains also serve the city, although one of the best ways to arrive is by boat, from which you can see the stunning and iconic San Francisco skyline. Boats stop at the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf.

Walking is possible in some neighbourhoods, and San Francisco has one of the best developed public transport systems in the country, so it is easy to get around.
