Avarua Flights Guide

Avarua, Cook IslandsAvarua is the national capital of the Cook Islands, located on the largest island, Rarotonga. Rarotonga perfectly matches the image of tropical paradise, covered in rugged mountains, lush jungles and powdery white-sand beaches. Lying about 900km from French Polynesia, Cook Islanders share the same laid-back culture as their neighbours, the Tahitians, along with a very similar language and lifestyle.

The commercial and political centre of the Cook Islands, Avarua is located on the northern side of Rarotonga. As the site of the island's airport, most tourists simply pass through Avarua on their way to the other Cook Islands. The city is typically referred to as “town” by most locals, since Avarua is essentially the civilization of the Cook Islands. It's one of the only places where you can find banks, government departments, larger shops, a post office and a police station.

Avarua is small enough that you can get around on foot, or the bus is also a reliable and affordable way to travel. Cook's Passenger Transport offers a round-the-island bus service along the main coast road, which leaves regularly from the bus stop outside Cook's Corner. Cycling is another popular way to see the island, providing the freedom to diverge off the busy coast road, and explore the island's quieter interior.

Avarua offers the best selection of restaurants, cafés, and bars on the island and thus, not surprisingly, it's the hub of Rarotonga's nightlife scene. Trader Jack's Bar & Grill at Avarua's old harbor is widely touted as one of the best bars in the South Pacific. Seafood is the staple of Rarotonga's cuisine, and in addition to being the best place for Friday night drinks, Trader Jack's is also well-known for its grilled “mai-mai”, or dolphin fish. Most restaurants in Avarua offer international dishes prepared with local ingredients, as well as more traditional Polynesian dishes.

Located at the western entrance to town, Te Punanga Nui Market is the place to be on Saturday mornings, when it fills up with stalls, people, and entertainment.
