Russia's St Petersburg is a thrilling city, crammed with historical and cultural delights, and a choice of attractions and activities to capture anyone's interest and imagination. A former capital city, today it is Russia's second city. It still retains a lot of its former grandeaur, appeal, and sparkle. The city is criss crossed with canals, and beautiful baroque bridges span the waters.
The city has good public transport networks, which include the metro, local buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Taxis are available. Of particular importance is your location in the evening – the bridges over the River Neva are all raised to allow water traffic to pass. If you are on the opposite side of the river to your accommodation it is more than likely that you will not be able to get back across until the following morning.
St Petersburg's number one sight is the fabulous Hermitage. Home to an expansive, impressive, and stunning collection of art, you should allow plenty of time to take in the many treasures contained within its walls. You can see pieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo, Rembrant, and more. The exterior is also simply jaw-dropping. It was a palace in the past.
Peter and Paul Fortress is another popular attraction, with a museum, a church, and various exhibits. The majority of the Czars' tombs can also be found here.
The Admiralty presents an attractive outside view, Tikhvan Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the world's greatest composers, and the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood is a lovely traditional Russian church that stands on the spot where Czar Alexander II was brutally murdered.
St Isaac's Cathedral and Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral are both eye-catching sights, and you can see the revered and striking Andreyevsky Cathedral on Vasilievsky Island.
St Petersburg has many excellent museums, including the Russian Museum, the quirky Kunstkamera, Menshikov Palace, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Erarta Museum and Galleries of Contemporary Art.
There are numerous statues, monuments, memorials, and sculptures scattered liberally across the city. The Theban Sphinxes are older than the city and present a dramatic sight.
St Petersburg offers a lively and varied night scene, and you must visit a ballet or an opera whilst in the city.
Most nationalities will need a visa to visit Russia. Pulkovo Airport is a major gateway into the city, and it operates flights to numerous domestic and international destinations. St Petersburg is well connected by train. The sleeper train to Moscow is a great experience! Places in Finland, Central Europe, and the Baltics can also be reached by rail. Various long distance buses also serve the city. A variety of cruises, ferries, and boat trips are possible.
