Paris CDG, full title Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, is a major airport in the French capital city. The IATA code is CDG. The huge airport is named after General de Gaulle, the founder of the French Fifth Republic and the leader of the Free French Forces. It is the largest airport in France, and is a major travel hub.
It is situated around 25 kilometres outside of the heart of Paris. It serves a wide range of domestic and international destinations.
Paris CDG has three terminals. Terminal 1 was constructed to resemble an octopus; there is a central circular building with seven smaller surrounding areas that are linked by underground passages. The main area contains the core services, whilst the smaller areas are home to the boarding gates. Within the central building, floor two hosts a variety of restaurants and shops, check in desks are situated on floor three, border control and duty free goods are located on the fourth floor, and the fifth floor is home to baggage reclaim and immigration controls.
Terminal 2 has seven buildings, identified using letters of the alphabet A through to G. One can walk between buildings 2A to 2F, whereas 2G must be accessed by bus. Terminal 3 has just the one hall.
A free shuttle service connects the three terminals, the train stations, and the car parks. Two rail services are available from the aiport; the TGV and the RER. The TGV allows passengers to continue their onwards journey with ease, travelling to various French cities including Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Dijon, Toulouse, Nantes, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Rennes, Toulon, and Poitiers. There are also trains to Belgium's Brussels. The RER is used to access Paris city centre and surrounding suburban areas. Various bus services are available, which include transport to Paris Orly Airport, the city centre, and Disneyland.
Within the airport, the area called Roissypole is home to offices, hotels, and shopping areas.
