Nouvea is the capital city of New Caledonia. It is situated on the main island of Grande Terre. In the Pacific Ocean, it is home to gorgeous beaches and fantastic colonial buildings. It offers a peaceful atmosphere and simple charms.
New Caladonia Airport lies some 52 kilometres away from the city. There are flights to and from Japan, Austalia, New Zealand, South Korea,Fiji, Vanuatu, and a selection of places in South East Asia. The closer Noumea Magenta Airport operates all domestic flights within the country. It offers flights to and from places such as the Isle of Pines, the Belep Islands, the Loyalty Islands, Touho, Koumac, and Kone.
There are several bus routes around the city, which are colour coded for convenience. To get between the major sights, hop on the delightful Petit Train or the Noumea Explorer.
The Museum of New Caledonia is a top place to learn more about the city's history and culture. You can see a great selection of cultural exhibits, including weapons, spears, boats, huts, and ornamental objects. Another place to gain insight is the Tjibaou Cultural Centre. Here you will find the famous and large wooden round houses, numerous works of art, traditional dancing and music, a shop, and a cafe.
There are several other museums in the city, including the City of Noumea Museum and the Maritime History Museum.
Water sports are popular at the enormous lagoon. Try snorkelling, diving, wind surfing, kite surfing, and sailing. There are lovely islands nearby that are well worth a day trip. Ouen Toro Park offers excellent walking and gorgeous views.
The zoo and aquarium are good for children.
