Nagoya is Japan's fourth largest city and it is located in the Chubu region of Honshu. It is a major centre for car production, but also has a few surprising tricks tucked up its sleeve. With several great attractions and a lively night life, spend a few days in this interesting city before darting off elsewhere.
Chubu Centrai International Airport is a major gateway to the city and it is situated on an artificial island near to the city. It serves a variety of international and domestic destinations. Nagoya Airport operates flights to and from several cities within Japan. Ferries run between Nagoya and Sendai, and between Nagoya and Tomakomai. Nagoya is linked to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyota, Gifu, Hamamatsu, and Shizuoka by rail. Nagoya is also connected to most major Japanese destinations by bus.
The city is very easy to get around by car. Public transport consists of trains, subways, and buses, but with the city being a huge industrial centre for car production the public transport system is not as good as in other Japanese cities. Taxis are widely available.
Many places of interest in Nagoya are, unsurprisingly, linked with the automotive industry. You can visit, for example, the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology and the Toyota Automobile Museum.
Other, non-car related, museums include the Nagoya City Art Museum, the Nagoya / Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Nagoya City Science Museum, and the Tokugawa Art Museum.
Nagoya Castle is a major city landmark and contains a museum, gardens, and an observation platform.
There are several shrines and temples around the city. These include the Atsuta Shrine, Osu Kannon Temple, Koshoji Temple, Nittaiji Temple, Toganji Temple, Shiroyama Hakusan Shrine, and Arako Kannon Temple.
Ride to the soaring balcony of the Nagoya TV Tower for terrific views.
A favourite meal to try in Nagoya is misokatsu; it is fried pork with miso sauce. There are many bars and clubs where you can while away the hours after dark.
