Australia's small town of Moruya sits on the banks of the pretty Moruya River near to the South Coast in the state of New South Wales. In the native Aboriginal language the name means the resting place of back swans. It is near to mountains and the coast so offers a range of landscapes, and in the town you will find many old historic buildings.
There is an airport in the town, which offers flights to and from Sydney. Buses connect the city to Sydney, Melbourne, Batemans Bay, and Canberra. You can drive to the town, and the driving time to Canberra is around two hours, Sydney can be reached in about five hours, and to get to or from Melbourne will take around ten hours. Within Moruya there are a few local buses and taxis.
Visit Moruya Museum to learn more about the gold rush period; it also has information about the town's history and heritage. There are several great exhibits, with many original items having been donated to the museum by private individuals.
There are a variety of activities available in the area. You can cycle along the Moruya Cycleway to enjoy the terrific views. For a different view of nature, you can also kayak along the river. There is a golf course in the town, as well as a race course. For some high speed and bumpy action, have a go on the dirt karts.
Visit the Deua National Park to see a terrific selection of some of nature's best creations. The Bendethera Caves are spectacular, reached by hiking through rugged and dramatic scenery. The Big Hole is exactly what its name suggests, and the Marble Arch is an awesome work of nature. Other popular spots in the park include the Big Badja and the Wyanbene Caves. Throughout the park you can see mountains, valleys, caves, rivers, and an abundance of wildlife. Different creatures that call the park home include kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums, wombats, and a large selection of different birds.
You can follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people to Bingie Point. Known as the Bingie Dreaming Track, it offers great surroundings and terrific views.
