Milan Travel Guide
Italy's Milan is known for being a major player in the fashion world and for having a world class football team. It is trendy, smart, exciting, and chic. It is also the financial heart of the country. It is a cosmopolitan city, with many visitors drawn more by the atmosphere and lifestyle rather than physical attractions. Milan is, however, a very old city, and one can easily find culture, history, and heritage beneath the modern veneer.
Some of Milan's main sightseeing spots include La Scala, a magnificent and grand opera house, the Duomo, an ornate, breath-taking, and large cathedral, and Castello Sforzesco, an imposing and proud medieval castle. A must see in the city is the incredibly famous Leonardo da Vinci painting, the Last Supper. It is housed within the Santa Maria alle Grazie Basilica, which in itself is an impressive building. Other highlights include the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the Pirelli Tower, and the large stadium of San Siro.
Of the city's many museums and art galleries, one not to miss is the Brera Art Gallery, which is home to some of the finest pieces in Europe. Inside, you will find the celebrated painting, The Kiss, by Francesco Hayez. There are historic churches, pretty parks, opulent palaces, and more to pique your interest in Milan.
Of course, you cannot visit Milan without indulging in some retail therapy. The longest shopping street is the busy Corso Buenas Aires. Check out the boutiques in the Fashion Quadrangle, even if you do not plan to buy anything.
Milan is one best places in Italy to try authentic Italian cuisine. It also has a vibrant night scene.
Milan is served by two main airports; Malpensa Aiport and Linate Airprt. Further afield, Orio al Serio and Parma can also be used to access the city. Rail services link Milan to all major Italian cities as well as a fair number of European destinations. The beautiful and unusual Central Station is the main train station in Milan. Bus services are also available to numerous destinations. Attempting to drive into, or around, Milan is strongly discouraged due to very busy roads. Within Milan there are local train and bus services, a metro network, and a tram system. Taxis are widely available, but expensive. Walking is the perfect way to soak up the atmosphere and see the sights.
