Whangarei Attractions - Things to do
Poor Knights Islands Day Trips leave from Tutukaka and are a great way to incorporate bird watching with kayaking, snorkelling or diving when you reach your destination, the Poor Knights Islands. These islands are a marine and nature reserve where you will be able to explore underwater caves, swim with giant sting rays, or snorkel. It is only a 35 minute boat trip from the mainland to the islands, leaving plenty of time to enjoy yourself. Between the mainland and the group of islands there is usually plenty of Marine life including dolphins and whales at the right time of year. There are also plenty of birds including the Bullers Shearwaters who only breed on these islands. URL: Kayaking around the Pacific Coast is a great option in a tour group. All those hidden away bays are there to explore with a guide and a kayak. There are plenty of areas to select from including the Tutukaka coast, the amazing marine reserves of Northland, or even an outer island. Depending upon your destination, and whether you want to leave your kayak to explore, snorkel, or fish, these trips can run for a half or full day. Some of the buildings include Riponui Pah School House, the first Women's Jail, Oruaiti Chapel(which is thought to be the smallest church in New Zealand), and Jane Mander's study. This venue will take several hours to see and is a great location for a picnic. Abbey Caves are home to thousands of glow worms, stalactites and stalagmites. A visit to these caves will probably take you about 2 hours. Abbey Caves are set in a landscape that has giant limestone rocks that are millions of years old.
