Wanganui Attractions - Things to do

Whanganui Riverboat Centre and Museum is dedicated to displaying the Whanganui River's colourful history as an important trading route. The museum has a photographic display of the riverboat era, and the salvation and restoration of the paddle steamer Waimarie. There is also an interesting display of artifacts relating to the river. The museum is housed in the building that was formerly the historic Wanganui Rowing Club. This was restored specifically to allow for the early restoration project of the Waimarie. The Whanganui Riverboat Centre is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm. Sundays and Public holidays 10am to 4pm.

Waimarie Paddle steamer Cruise has been voted Wanganui's best tourist attraction. The PS Waimarie is the very last of New Zealand's paddle steamers, and was built in 1899. The Waimarie worked the Whanganui River for almost 50 years until 1949. The boat sank in 1952 and was salvaged in 1993 and restored. The Waimarie does river cruises up the Whangarui for 13 very picturesque kilometres to the village of Upokongaro. This is a 3 to 4 hour journey depending on the day of the week. The cruise does not run in August.

Royal Wanganui Opera House is the only surviving building of its style in the Southern Hemisphere and is one of the town's landmark cultural icons. The Opera House was built in 1899 and is still a fully functional theatre and it's excellent acoustics have been acknowledged by artists worldwide. The Opera House was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's reign.

Whanganui Regional Museum is a must see for all. This museum is considered one of New Zealand's best regional museums and is home to an amazing collection of Maori treasures. A special mention would be the Maori war canoe featuring intricate carving. There is also a collection of art that was created long ago by the Whangarui River Maori ancestors. Additionally, there are also informative displays on the region's environment, natural history and early life and settlement. This museum is extremely child friendly and also features a shop which sells New Zealand products,as well as locally and Maori made jewellery.

Bushy Park is a forest sanctuary and Kiwi creche, due to its predator fence. This park has pristine native forest covering 90 hectares and is home to the Southern Hemisphere's largest rata tree. There are Kiwi tours and well maintained walking tracks. The entry fee allows you entrance to the near original condition 1906 Edwardian homestead that is on the grounds. The homestead provides accommodation, lunches and teas.
