Wanaka Attractions - Things to do
Stuart Landsborough’s Puzzling World is a must see for everyone, no matter their age. This amazing attraction specialises in "puzzling eccentricity" and has been in operation for over 35 years. Some of the amazing spectacles are the Illusions rooms, the modern Great Maze, Oddities, Eccentric architecture, a 3D hologram hall, and a puzzle centre. Puzzling World is open every day from 8.30 am and is located 2 km from the lakefront. You will need to bring your camera for this one. No one at home will believe their eyes when they see the crazy architecture featuring unbelievable leaning towers. The Great Maze is 1.5 km long and can take between 30 and 60 minutes to find the way out. Don't worry if you start to panic you can use the emergency exits, included just for that reason. Puzzling World is open every day from 8.30 am and is located 2 km from the lakefront. URL: http://www.puzzlingworld.co.nz/ SkyDive Wanaka is not for the faint hearted. However if you are an adrenalin junkie you will love free falling from a height of 15 000 feet above New Zealand's tallest snow capped mountains. You are also treated to a scenic flight to enjoy the panorama of lakes, rivers, glaciers and Mt Cook before jumping out of the plane. You will then soar under a parachute above the peaks before safely landing. Open every day of the year except Christmas Day, weather allowing. Bookings are essential. URL: http://www.skydivewanaka.com The New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum, also known as Wanaka Warbirds, has been created "to honour and record the history of the New Zealand Fighter pilots and crew". During WW11 New Zealand contributed more fighter pilots than any other country, per capita. 80% of the fighter pilots that were killed in action did not even see their 25th birthday. This is an amazing collection of WW11 fighter aircraft including Hurricane, Vampire, Mustang and Polikarpov I-16 & I -153 that are still airworthy. The museum uses video, audio, stories and photographs to document these pilots and their deeds. Open 9am to 4pm 7 days per week. URL: http://www.nzfpm.co.nz Wanaka Transport & Toy Museum contains over 30 000 items in its fascinating and unique collection. The range includes Barbie dolls, rare cars, ambulances, fire engines, trucks, unusual motorcycles, aircraft and military vehicles. The collection is one of the biggest private exhibits in the Southern Hemisphere. (Sounds like a very big toy box would be needed.) The Toy museum is open every day except Christmas Day from 8.30 am to 5pm. The Town of Alexandra is 87 km south of Wanaka, a bit more than an hour's drive, and is an old gold rush town. The Dunstan gold fields were an important gold field in the late 19th century. This is a popular destination for mountain biking around the Old Man, Raggedy and Dunstan mountains, following the historic gold trails. Other attractions include the very tall Alexandra clock, and the Alexandra museum.
