Walgett Attractions - Things to do
Collarenebri is about 70 km north east of Walgett. This town also lies on the Barwon River and is renowned for its superb fishing sites. You can also visit Collymongle Station and see the Carved trees, which are of great significance to the local indigenous people. A must see for lovers of culture. There is also a sacred Aboriginal Cemetery that has been well maintained, just out of the town, which is probably best appreciated with a local guide. The actual township of Collarenebri still has buildings dating back to 1910, which add a little historical flavour to the atmosphere.
Surrounding Opal Fields. North west of Walgett are the opal fields of Glengarry, Sheepyard, and Grawin. These towns are accessed via the small village of Cumborah which is about 48 km NW of Walgett. You can also fossick in the gravel pits nearby Comborah. Another 17 km along in a north westerly direction will bring you to the Grawin field which is famous for the find 'The Light of the World' in 1928. You can fuel up here and also get basic provisions. From here it is another 7 km to the Glengarry field where there is a pub and a golf club. Sheepyard is accessed from Glengarry and is the most productive and the youngest of the fields.
Glengarry Hilton is the oldest pub on the Opal Fields and can be a great place to grab some lunch or a cold drink after your hard work driving and fossicking. You can grab lunch there from 12to 2pm daily and dinner is from 6 to 8pm every day. The Glengarry Hilton is 70 km north of Walgett. There are showers, toilets, and even backpacker accommodation if you are too tired to drive any further. If you manage to catch any yabbies in their dam they will even cook them up for you. There are locally produced arts and crafts for sale opposite.
Walgett Bore Baths are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and are run by the local council. These are part of the artesian bores that are prolific in this neck of the woods. Many folk swear by the therapeutic powers of the heated mineral waters.
Walgett Rodeo is held on the third weekend in August each and every year. This is becoming an increasingly popular event. Along with horse events there are also steer wrestling, bull riding, campdraft, gymkhana, and children are provided for with a poddy riding competition and a junior rodeo. The Walgett Rodeo draws competitors from all over Australia. Horse events include Bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, and the wild horse race. Other events include bull riding, ladies barrel racing, rope and tie, ladies breakaway roping and the buck jump. There is also a band to provide music for a night of dancing.
Come-By-Chance Picnic Race. This is the name of the town, not a reflection of the organising ability of the race committee. Come-by-Chance is a tiny village in the Walgett Shire that has their famous picnic race late September every year. Gates open at 11 am and normally close at 4.30 pm, but the bar generally stays open until about 9.30 pm. As well as the horse races there is a Miss Come-by-Chance Race Girl competition and a jumping castle for the children. The main race is 1400 m and the picnic race day has been running since it started in the 1950's.
