Townsville Attractions - Things to do
Reef HQ Aquarium is the world's largest living coral reef aquarium and is a truly amazing attraction. The exhibits are so well designed you would almost think that you are in the ocean, except that you are still dry. There are such fascinating exhibits as the predator, and coral reef. The predator tank is especially popular at shark feeding times. This aquarium features thousands of marine fish and animals and is well worth a visit. Tours start at 10 am and run till 4pm. The popular predator tour is on at 11am. Reef HQ is next door to the Museum of Tropical Queensland. URL: http://www.reefhq.com.au/ Museum of Tropical Queensland has won many awards and is actually a campus of the Queensland University. This museum documents the heritage and history of North Queensland, in air conditioned comfort. This museum has plenty of things to look at and will probably take you a good 2 or 3 hours to really enjoy and appreciate. There are 6 galleries here including Mind Zone, Enchanted Rainforest, and the Pandora Gallery. MindZOne is described as fun science for all the family with interactive and fun science exhibits that are sure to get you thinking. The Pandora Gallery documents the shipwreck Pandora, with artifacts salvaged from the wreck, and also documents other Queensland shipwrecks. Open 9.30am to 5 pm daily. Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. Anzac Day open 1pm to 5pm. The Museum is next door to Reef HQ in Flinders St East. Today Magnetic Island is a 20 to 25 minute journey in a high speed passenger ferry with services all day and evening, making this just as popular for a day trip as a longer stay. Magnetic Island is World Heritage listed and has 23 bays and beaches. The largest colony of koalas living in the wild call this island home, along with possums, rock wallabies, and over 100 different bird species. There are also beautiful coral reefs that make for truly memorable snorkelling and scuba diving. URL:http://www.magnetic-island.com.au/ Paluma Rainforest Village is located in the Paluma Range National Park and both destinations are extremely popular getaways, seemingly untouched by over development, even though tin miners lived there 130 years ago. The Paluma Range National Park is the southern gateway to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. To get there you will be travelling along the historic Mt Spec Tourist Rd (which is not recommended for caravans, sorry). This road was constructed in the Great Depression in the 1930's. The mostly hand built road still retains beautiful examples of the old stonework, and a great example of this is the Little Crystal Creek gorge stone masonry bridge. The swimming pools in this creek are refreshingly cool. The Paluma village is 1000 metres above sea level making this village a cool mountain retreat with plenty of rainforest walks and bird watching. There is no mobile phone service here.
