Tirana Attractions - Things to do
The National Historical Museum The museum dominates Skanderbeg Square, and is easily identifiable by the huge mosaic above its doorway. The museum houses a fascinating rage of exhibits, organized chronologically from the Stone Age right through to World War II. Perhaps the most interesting part of the museum is the top floor, which is devoted to Albania’s communist period and the events that ended it. There is a reconstruction of a labour camp cell that illustrates the appalling conditions so many lived in, and part of the 2.6m high barbed wire fence that sealed the country’s borders can also be viewed. There are also photographs, belongings, and all names of the Albanians killed during this time. http://www.albaniantourism.com/ The National Art Gallery This excellent museum exhibits Albanian art including Byzantine paintings, impressionist sculptures, and socialist realist art. The post war collection has several pieces depicting the liberation of Tirana. A half-dissected bunker has been installed in the garden of the museum, giving a unusual insight into how these devices were built. http://www.albaniantourism.com/ Mount Dajti The Mount Dajti National Park is just 25km to the East of Tirana, and is centered on Mount Dajti itself, a small mountain by Albanian standards, whose 1613m peak can be seen from Skanderbeg Square on a clear day. The forest reaches almost to the summit, making it a pleasant place to walk even in mid summer. However the area around the summit is a military zone, so take a guide with you if you want to go all the way to the top. http://www.albaniantourism.com/
