Taupo Attractions - Things to do
Huka Falls are New Zealand's most visited natural attraction and when you get there you will see why. The power of the mighty Waikato River is dramatically forced through a narrow gorge, down a 20 metre drop, and hey presto, the falls and rapids are created. About 220,000 litres per second of water is forced through this volcanic gorge, making for a great location for a dramatic jet boat ride. The Huka Falls are located in Wairakei Tourist park, which is a 5 minute drive north of Taupo. Don't forget your camera for this one. This natural Wonder only appeared in the 1950's when all of a sudden the land became hot, steam emerged along with other geothermal phenomena like craters of boiling mud. Why did this happen? A nearby geothermal power station lowered the underground water pressure, forcing superheated water to rise to the surface and escape through any available crack. There are wooden walkways to protect you from the heat of the ground, and these are regularly being relocated. There are several viewing platforms which give you a great view of the forces of nature at work. Craters of the Moon is just north of Taupo. and is extremely well sign posted. It is open every day of the year. Minimal entry fee. Taupo Bungy Jumping is the ideal activity fot those looking for some adrenalin producing adventure. A solo jump here will have you falling at speeds of over 60km/hr. Taupo Bungy lies off a public track between Taupo town and the Huka Falls. Before you jump you must pass a medical clearance and read and sign a waiver form. You are not permitted to jump if you are intoxicated. (So no Dutch courage allowed.) The main carving is over 10 metres high and is a likeness of a visionary Maori navigator, Ngatoroirangi, who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to the Taupo area over a thousand years ago. There are also 2 smaller Celtic carvings of the south wind and a mermaid in recognition of the cross culture of New Zealand. These carvings took Maori master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and his 4 helpers 4 summers to complete and were started in the late 1970's.
