Suva Attractions - Things to do
Fiji Museum houses archaeological significant material that is more than 3700 years old. The Museum also exhibits cultural objects from the indigenous people as well as representing the various other cultural communities that have made Fiji their home over the last century. The Museum currently has 5 main galleries including an art gallery, a maritime gallery, a history gallery, an Indo-Fijian gallery, and the Masi Gallery. The Maritime gallery provides a fascinating insight into the Fijians' traditional sailing methods in the 1800s. The Masi gallery is all about Fijian bark cloth, or Masi. Masi was used for many purposes in Fiji, including as clothing. The Museum is located in the Botanical Gardens, also known as Thurston Gardens, and is open Monday to Thursday 9.30 to 4.30 pm,Friday 9.30 to 4 pm, and Saturday 9.30 to 4.30 . Levuka was settled by Europeans in 1830 and had a colourful history with cotton, coconut and sandal wood traders. Levuku has escaped modernisation and overdevelopment and is like stepping back in time. This is a great place to visit to see how Fiji was in the early stages of European settlements. Levuka can be accessed by plane or ferry. URL: http://www.levukafiji.com/index.htm Fiji Spice Gardens are lush green gardens about 22 kms west of Suva. This is a must see for any one who loves spices, fragrances, gardens or cooking. The gardens are open 7 days a week. Monday to Saturday from 9 to 4.30pm and Sundays 12 to 4.30 pm. These gardens both grow and sell such spices as vanilla, cardamon, ginger, pepper, turmeric, and nutmeg. Demonstrations are given in both growing the spices and cooking with them. http://web.mac.com/ronaldgatty/Fiji_Spice_Garden/Welcome.html Thurston Gardens was formerly known as the Suva Botanical Gardens until it was renamed in 1976 and is the location for the Fiji Museum, built there in 1955. Thurston Gardens is located on the original site of Suva, before it was relocated over the water to Levuka. The gardens were started in 1905. Sadly the funding has dwindled over the years, and the Gardens are not in pristine condition any more. However they are still great for a wander in daylight hours to appreciate the local plant life and established trees. http://www.fijimuseum.org.fj/fijimuseum.htm
