Maroochydore (Sunshine Coast) Attractions - Things to do
Australia Zoo. Australia Zoo is a must see for everyone whatever your age. For those without their own transport, the Zoo runs buses which can transport you out to the Zoo and save you quite a lot of driving time. Australia Zoo is located on the Steve Irwin Way, at Beerwah, about a 50 minute drive from Maroochydore. Australia Zoo is open from 9am to 5pm daily, and it is a great idea to get there as close to 9 as you can, as the awesome exhibitions start soon after. Check out the crocodiles, birds of prey, reptiles, koalas, kangaroos, along with the tigers and elephants. Wear your most comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking. Australia Zoo has shops, restaurants and cafes for those who develop a hunger, thirst, or yearning for a souvenir. http://www.australiazoo.com.au/ Fraser Island This is the largest sand island in the world, and as such is heritage listed. Fraser Island is located north of Noosa, and is accessed by car ferry or boat. Vehicular access to Fraser Island is limited to 4WD's only. Fraser Island is home to dingoes, amazing wildlife, ancient rain forests, along with over 100 lakes, and colourful sand dunes and cliffs. This is a must see for nature lovers and keen fisher folk. Driving to, from, and around Fraser can be challenging, so for those who prefer to take it easy, there are many 1, 2 and 3 day guided tours available. Accommodation on Fraser ranges from camping, to resort style, to beach cottages available for letting. http://www.fraserisland.net/ Hinterland. The Sunshine Coast has a beautiful hinterland, which is fairly comparable to the Blue Mountains in NSW. The Blackall Ranges are about a 30 minute drive from the beaches and offer magnificent panoramic views from the southern most point of the Sunshine Coast to the northern most point at Noosa. There are several towns located up in the ranges that are full of old world charm, galleries, cafes, wineries, and eateries. Waterfalls, rain forest walks, and a botanical garden are available for those who enjoy the great outdoors. The elevation of the Blackall Ranges ensures not only magnificent panoramic photos, but a cooler temperature by up to several degrees than that on the coast. The 2 most popular towns of the hinterland are Montville and Mapleton. http://www.brbta.com/ http://www.tq.com.au/
