Skopje Attractions - Things to do
The Kale Fortress
The Kale Fortress occupies a commanding position in the centre of Skopje, and although its exact origins are not known, archaeological finds show that there was a settlement at the site in prehistoric times. The fortress was badly damaged during the 1963 earthquake, but rebuilding and preservation work has limited the long term impact.

Museum of Macedonia
The national museum of the Republic of Macedonia was originally established in Skopje in 1945, but when its premises were destroyed during the earthquake, a new complex was built, which opened in 1976. The museum contains exhibitions on archaeology and ethnology, and details the history of Macedonia from the Ottoman period to the end of the Second World War. The Icon Gallery, which contains icons, altars and fresco paintings from the post-Byzantine period and the Renaissance is especially worth visiting.

The Stone Bridge
The Stone Bridge over the Vardar River is one of the iconic images of Skopje. It is thought to have been built during the reign of Murat II (1421 - 1451). It is a massive construction, made from stone blocks, and has undergone many repairs, especially after a major flood in 1905. However, it has retained its original character and was one of the few monuments not to be damaged in the earthquake.
