The River Walk on the San Antonio River is a major attraction at the heart of this city. It is a riverside park below the elevated street level along the river in the downtown. The street above is lined with restaurants and shops. The Pearl Brewery, several museums and several cafes line the walkway itself in addition to the landscaped park. The Alamo fort was 100 years old before the famed battle between the Mexican and the Texans seeking independence. It had been built as a Mission in 1724. In 1793 it was taken over by the Spanish crown, along with 4 other San Antonio Missions, the 5 of which are all museums today. The Texas Ranger Museum was first opened by this law enforcement organisation in 1936. Documents and memorabilia explore the history of the Rangers since the days of the US Civil War. Real life Rangers’ stories as well as Ranger mythology are explored here. The museum includes an interactive “Ranger Town,” recreating life at the start of the 20th Century. The McNay Art Museum is home to more than 20,000 works of art from different period and parts of the planet. Among its collections is the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. The Main Plaza in San Antonio is the frequent site of free concerts and other events. There are 5 fountains here and stairs descending to the River Walk.
