Thessaloniki (Saloniki) Attractions - Things to do
Archaeological Museum The main attraction at the city’s leading museum is the Gold of Macedon exhibition. This exhibits treasures found at the royal tombs of Philip II of Macedon at the Macedonian capital Aegae, modern Veryina. Exhibits include incredible amounts of gold, silver, ivory and bronze, exquisitely crafted into masks, crowns, and jewellery, as well as practical items such as mixing bowls and lamp shades. Phillip II’s gold casket, along with his bones, has now been returned to its resting place at Veryina. Other notable exhibitions at the museum include a gallery containing grave finds from ancient Sindos, and a display of Hellenistic and Roman art. http://www.amth.gr/ Jewish Museum In the sixteenth century, when Jewish families were expelled from Spain and Portugal, many moved to Thessaloniki. In fact nearly half the population of the city were Jewish, and this community dominated the cultural, social, and commercial life of Thessaloniki for around four hundred years. In the Bazaar quarter, a house that formerly belonged to a Jewish family houses the Jewish museum. This traces the history of Jews in the city and includes some religious and secular items that amazingly survived the 1917 fire and the Holocaust. Some items were saved from the enormous Jewish cemetery that was attached by the Nazis during the Second World War. http://www.jmth.gr/
