Rotorua Attractions - Things to do
Whakarewarewa is a living Maori village that allows the visitor to fully appreciate the culture and traditions of the Maori people. See how the villagers incorporate the steam vents and hot springs into their everyday bathing and cooking. The Maori crafts and culture are combined with bubbling mud pools, craters, geysers, terraces and springs. Cultural performances are twice daily, where using dance, song, traditional costumes and hand movements, traditional stories are retold for your enjoyment. Whakarewarewa has been running since 1998 but the families who have lived there in that village have been entertaining visitors for two hundred years. Whakarewarewa is close to the city and is considered to be the premier attraction. Open 8.30 to 5pm every day except Christmas. Cultural performances are at 11.15am and 2 pm. Hangi meals from 12 to 2pm. Guided tours are available every hour. This is an extremely popular tourist attraction. This valley is the greenest of all the thermal areas, and boasts the world's largest hot spring. This valley came to life as a result of the 1886 Tarawera eruption and features other terraces and springs on trails winding for 4 km through the native bush. This valley is also home to the very blue Inferno Crater Lake. There is also a scenic and informative 30 minute cruise on Lake Rotomahana at the bottom of the valley. URL: http://www.waimangu.co.nz/ Tikitere, or Hell's Gate, is the only thermal park still owned by the Maori, and has been a sacred place for the Ngati Rangiteaorere tribe for over 700 years. Hell's Gate is the most active geothermal park in Rotirua and is home to the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, the largest hot whirlpool, and the largest mud volcano in New Zealand. This park is set on 50 acres of spurting geysers, bubbling and boiling mud pools, and steaming hot springs. Hells Gate lies to the east of Lake Rotorua. URL: http://www.rotorua.nz.com/tikitere.aspx Rotorua Museum is a great way to educate yourself about the people, culture and volcanic landscape of Rotorua. The Rotorua Museum can be found in the Bath House building, a very famous building in Totorua's history. The Bath House was a therapeutic treatment spa. The nearby thermal springs were piped to provide the healing waters to private bathrooms and deep pools. There is a range of dynamic experiences including the cinematic Rotorua Stories. Educate yourself about the history of the Rotorua Spa. Find out why folk travelled from all over the globe to visit the 'Great South Seas Spa' as this was formerly named. Learn about the devastating eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. Learn about the bravery of B Company of 28 Maori Battalion in WW11. Finish off by visiting the beautifully restored Blue Baths. The Rotorua Museum is open 9am to 8pm in summer and 9am to 5pm in winter. Rotorua Museum of Art and History URL: http://www.rotoruamuseum.co.nz/ Agroventures is an appropriately named collection of adventure activities, all housed just 10km north of the city in the Agrodome.
