Riga Attractions - Things to do
St Peter’s church St Peter’s church has a dramatic impact on the Riga skyline, and the existing steel spire is the third construction in the same style; the first two were made of wood and burned after a lightening strike in the eighteenth century and an attack during the Second World War. The view from the spire is stunning and there is a lift to take you over half way up. http://www.peterbaznica.lv/ Riga Castle Originally built as the residence of the grand master of the Livonian Order in 1330, the canary yellow Riga Castle is now home to Latvia’s president. It looks younger than it is due to extensive restoration, and although it doesn’t look much like a castle from inland, there are more fortifications on the river side. Parts of the castle house the Museum of Foreign Art and the History Museum of Latvia. http://www.rigatourism.lv/ Latvian War Museum Housed in the Powder Tower, which is the only remaining tower of the eighteen which used to make up the city walls, the Latvian War Museum has some fascinating permanent exhibitions including one about Latvian soldiers during the Second World War. The history of the building itself is also worth noting. Initially a gunpowder store, it has served as a prison, a torture chamber, and a student party venue. It still has nine Russian cannonballs embedded in its walls from eighteenth and nineteenth century assaults. http://www.karamuzejs.lv/
