Raleigh-Durham Attractions - Things to do
The African American Cultural Complex is one of numerous sites here commemorating African American heritage in the area. Several buildings house artefacts expressing the contributions and heritage of African descendants in America. There is a walking trail along a creek on the property where the 3 museum buildings are located. A Botanical Gardens and Nature Preserve are here as well. Admission is free of charge. (http://www.aaccmuseum.org/) A short drive from the Triangle area is the Falls Lake State Recreation Area. There is a 4,856-hectare lake and woodlands covering 10,522 hectares. Boating, biking, fishing, hiking, swimming and camping are some of the activities carried out by park visitors. This is a network of 7 parks located just 16 kilometres north of Raleigh. (http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/fala/main.php) One of the many historic sites in ths area is the Duke Homestead. This was the home of Washington Duke and his family as of 1852. Duke’s sons would go on to found the American Tobacco Company. The family’s first tobacco factory is among the structures here at the homestead compound. Farming techniques and processing is witnessed on visits to this living museum in Durham. (http://www.nchistoricsites.org/duke/duke.htm) Cameron Village has been a shopping and dining neighborhood of Raleigh since 1949. Boutique stores with a small-town feel and various small restaurants line the streets here. The North Carolina Museum of Art recently began displaying large works on the street on what is referred to as the “Cameron Canvas” above one of the local shops. (http://shopcameronvillage.com/info/about.cfm) Carrboro, in the Chapel Hill area, is home to the Arts Center, which opened in the mid 1980s. It is a community based venue with 2 theatres. Concerts of varied musical genres and live theatre can be enjoyed here as well as visual art work, displayed in the centre’s gallery space.
