Proserpine Attractions - Things to do
Lake Proserpine, or Peter Faust Dam, is about 26 km out of the town. This is the perfect location for those who are into water activities such as water skiing, canoeing, kayaking and wind surfing. This dam is probably even more famous for its fishing potential. Lake Proserpine is home to some of Australia's largest impounded Barramundi and Sooty Grunters. Pack the rods and the picnic basket as picnic facilities are available. Keen anglers may like to note that Lake Proserpine is home to the very popular Lake Proserpine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament every October. Lake Proserpine is on Crystal Brook Rd, Proserpine. Conway National Park is 28 km east of Proserpine and is a tranquil coastal park with wonderful views over the Whitsunday Passage. Conway National Park has plenty of flora and fauna including Proserpine rock wallabies, along with orange footed scrub fowl and the Australian brush turkey. The Mount Ropper lookout provides a great view over Long, Dent, Henning, and Hamilton Islands. There is a picnic area on Shute Harbour Rd that gives you access to the rainforest. The traditional owners of Conway National Park are the Gia and Ngaro Elders. Pandanus Creek Track is in the Cathu State Forest which is located behind the Whitsunday coast in the Clarke Range. The foliage in the State Forest is quite diverse ranging from dense rainforest and tall wet eucalypt forest nearer the range to exotic Caribbean pine plantations and Eucalyptus alba woodlands on the creek flats. The Pandanus Creek Track, at Jaxut, trails along the creek through lush rainforst. Wildlife you may see includes wallabies, northern quolls, whiptails and the distinctive bright blue Ulysses butterfly. Cedar Creek Falls is just 19 km out of Proserpine on the Conway Beach Rd. These beautiful waterfalls are stunning in the wet and have a permanent swimming hole in a natural rock amphitheatre at the bottom. You should be aware that it is prohibited to dive or jump from the falls. The plant life around the falls is spectacular with wild orchids, majestic Alexandra palms, red and white cedars, and strangler figs. The museum hoses collections, along with offering local historical research and genealogical study. The museum also is a cultural centre displaying local arts and crafts as well as visiting exhibitions. The museum focuses on the previous century of Proserpine and also includes marine and mining history. Hotel accommodation can be arranged at : http://www.hotelsaccommodation.com.au/Orange-NSW/
