Pisa Attractions - Things to do

The Leaning Tower

A visit to Pisa wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its iconic leaning tower, the Campanile. Construction on the tower began in 1173, but the ground began to subside in 1185 and work was stopped. Architect Giovanni di Simone resumed work the following century, and managed to limit the problems caused by the subsidence, but work stopped again when Pisa was defeated by the Genoese at Meloria in 1284. The final ring of the tower was added in the fourteenth century. Visits to the tower are limited, but it is possible to climb the three hundred steps to the top. Many visitors are satisfied with the classic photo showing them holding up the tower.

Museum of the Ancient Ships of Pisa

In 1998 the remains of the urban harbour of Pisae, the ancient Etruscan and Roman harbour, were discovered, and in it were several well preserved ancient ships. At least nine of the ships, along with their cargo which remained intact as it was buried without exposure to oxygen, are on display at the museum. The ships give a fascinating insight into Roman and Etruscan Pisa, and the places that they traded with.

Opera Museum

Another of the monuments in the ‘Field of Miracles’ where the leaning tower stands, the Opera Museum has had many uses since it was built in the twelfth century. Originally designed as the home of the canons of the cathedral, it was converted into a Diocesan Seminary in the sixteenth century. In the eighteenth century it was bought by Giovanni Rosini and became the local Academy of Fine Arts, but it was converted back to a religious building in the nineteenth century when it became a female monastery. It finally became the Opera museum in 1979.
