Paraburdoo Attractions - Things to do
Hammersley Iron Ore Open Cut Mine Tours are a great way to get up close to the massive mining equipment and transport. This tour takes visitors into the mining pit around the mine site and the town, and takes about 90 minutes. This mine produces a staggering 17 million tonnes of iron ore yearly, and it is crushed and screened at Paraburdoo before being transported by train to Tom Price. These trains are over 2 km in length, weigh over 25 000 tonnes, and contain 200 cars, and require 6 engines to enable the train to climb an unfriendly 300 metre gradient. These tours require bookings and are run daily. Fortescue Falls are located in Karijini National Park. This is literally a tropical oasis in the middle of a desert. The Fortescue Fallas are the only permanent waterfall in the Karijini National Park. To reach the falls you will follow a steep tail from the car park, and than follow a narrow path. As you make your way down the path you will notice that the gorge walls that are iron ore rich will become purple and deep red, and the foliage will become more tropical and lush. Underneath the Fortescue Falls is a permanent spring fed swimming hole. The walk and the swim will probably take about 2 hours. The Hamersley gorges are more than 2000 million years old, making for some of the world's oldest rocks, and have been carved out by rivers. The walls of the chasms are dramatically coloured in striped layers ranging from pink to red, green and blue, depending on the light and time of day. The gorges can be up to 100 metres in depth. The gorges can be extremely narrow at the bases or wide enough to make swimming pools. The Hamersley gorges provide cool and refreshing oases from the rugged desert surrounds. These gorges are home to pebble mound mice, geckos, goannas, lizards, snakes, dingoes, red kangaroos, echidnas, rock wallabies and many types of birds. Town of Tom Price lies at the base of Mt Nameless about 80km from Paraburdoo. Mt Nameless lies 1128 metres above sea level and is the highest accessible mountain by 4 wheel drive in WA. From up here you will get a great view of the township and the iron ore mine. Karijini National Park is only 40 km from this town.
