Palmerston North Attractions - Things to do
Dugald MacKenzie Rose Garden is home to more than 5000 roses, and includes the Rose Breeding and Trialing Centre. It has been voted one of the best 5 rose gardens globally. The best time of year to visit these gardens is in summer from December to March when everything is blooming. Dugald McKenzie Rose Garden can be found in the Victoria Esplanade Gardens. The gardens are formally designed and have 96 rose beds which are then bordered by camellias. This is an extremely popular venue for weddings, picnics and photographers. The gardens are also used to test new varieties of roses that are bred there. Te Manawa is a regional culture centre combining art gallery, museum, and interactive science centre, so there is something for everyone. There is an excellent collection of regionally and nationally important Maori treasures, along with natural history, and New Zealand contemporary art. Both international and local shows are exhibited. Te Manawa is open daily 10am -5pm except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and is in 326 Main St. http://www.temanawa.co.nz/ Manawatu Gorge Walk runs the entire length of the impressive Manawatu Gorge, famous for having a river pass through a mountain gorge, and not alongside it. This track can take anywhere from 3-5 hours, one way, but the Totara Loop Track is a shorter loop section at the Woodville end. This Reserve has steep greywacke ranges which makes for a very distinctive landscape. The emergence of the greywacke ranges along with the water erosion from the river has created the steep gorge. There are plenty of birds to be seen including tui, tomtit, harrier hawk and the grey warbler. Manawatu Gorge track is about 12 km east of Palmy North, near State Highway 3. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/wanganui/palmerston-north-area/ New Zealand Rugby Museum is a must do for all rugby fans, and sports lover alike. You do not have to know anything about the game of rugby to enjoy a visit here. This museum opened in 1969 and is the world's first rugby museum and is home to the largest collection of rugby memorabilia and relics in the world. There is also a large photo library documenting the history of the All Blacks team., The museum houses every whistle and coin that are used in every single World Cup Rugby match. There are also recent videos that you can view. This museum is an easy walk from the city centre and is open Monday to Saturday 10 to 4 pm, and Sunday 1.30 to 4pm. The perfect venue for when the ladies are shopping. http://www.rugbymuseum.co.nz/
