Tahquitz Canyon is on the land of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla people. It is only 5 minutes outside of the city. Self guided tours from the Visitors Centre lead through the canyon, where ancient pictographs can be seen as well as local life forms. Reptiles and amphibians both abound. Joshua Tree National Park is a 20-30 minute drive from Palm Springs. There are 12 nature trails and 9 campgrounds here. Backcountry camping is also allowed as well as rock climbing. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum at the Desert Hot Springs Historical Site is housed in a replica of a multi-leveled Pueblo structure. It houses aboriginal artwork and antique tools as well as photographs. (http://www.cabotsmuseum.org/)
 
The Coachella Valley Preserve is an oasis in the desert and home to the fringe-toed lizard, an animal unique to this location. Most dune habitat in the area that is livable for the local fauna and flora today is in this park. A variety of birds, mammals and reptiles inhabit the park.
