Palermo Attractions - Things to do
Palermo Cathedral The Cathedral of Palermo is a majestic sight, rising amongst the narrow streets and four storey buildings of the Cassaro. Originally built in 1184, the aisles and baroque dome were added later, but the cathedral retains much of its original features. A silver urn containing the remains of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo, can be found in the cathedral, along with the tombs of Henry VI, Frederick II, and Constance of Aragon. http://www.cattedrale.palermo.it/ Teatro Massimo Recognisable from the outside as part of the set of Godfather III, this nineteenth century opera house was designed by Giovan Battista Basile and still boasts one of the largest stages in Europe. A performance is the best way to appreciate the theatre and the Liberty style auditorium, but if you just have time for the tour, make sure you test out the spooky acoustics in the Pompeian room. http://www.teatromassimo.it/ Palazzo dei Normanni and Palatine Chapel Now the seat of Sicily’s regional assembly, the Palace is a perfect example of Palermo’s turbulent history. Starting out as a fifth century Punic fortress, it was subsequently occupied by Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and Bourbons. The highlight is the gilded Palatine Chapel, with exquisite mosaics depicting mainly Old Testament scenes. The palace and chapel can be found on the Piazza del Parlamento. http://www.ars.sicilia.it/
