In addition to its 5 interior galleries focused on the peoples and traditions of the area, history, and natural sciences, its outside areas offer a .5 km walking tour, oil field exhibits and several sculptures. Interactive displays help explore the 2,000 artefacts in the permanent collection. (http://www.okhistorycenter.org/) The Historic Stockyard City, just outside of the downtown, is home to the world’s largest cattle auction. It is also the site of a steakhouse for dining, entertainment and dozens of shops catering to cowboy fashion. Handcrafted leather goods and other crafts are a big attraction for shoppers. The public livestock market opened here in 1910. (http://www.stockyardscity.org/) Just to the town’s northeast is the Adventure District of the city. A racetrack casino, zoo and botanical gardens are all found in this area. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, National Softball Hall of Fame and Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum are all found here, as well as a multi-theatre cinema. It is on the site of the former Federal Building, blown up by domestic terrorist and US citizen,Timothy McVeigh, in 1995. The outdoor memorial is a unique attraction while the indoor exhibits educate on what happened here, on violence in general and regarding peaceful alternatives.
