BHP Billiton Mt Whaleback Mine Tour. This mine is the largest open cut iron ore mine in the world. This tour lasts for 90 minutes running once daily at 9.30 am, every day May to September, and Monday through Friday from October to April. You will need to arrive 15 minutes before the tour starts. You will not be able to go on the tour if you are not wearing long tops to the wrists, long trousers to the ankles, and fully enclosed shoes. It is strongly recommended that you bring your own drinking water with you. Children under 6 years are not legally allowed to go on this tour. Karijini National Park is located in the Hamersley Ranges and is the second largest National Park in WA. This park is less than a 2 hour drive, or 200 km north west from Newman along the sealed Great Northern Highway. This park features winding jagged gorges, sheer rocks cliffs, waterfalls, and beautiful clear swimming holes.There are many walking trails through this park varying from easy strolls to challenging. Wildlife includes rock wallabies, dingoes, and many birds and reptiles. There are excellent picnic areas and a visitor information centre where you can get cold drinks. The Rudall River National Park is the largest national park in WA, and also one of the largest in the world, covering 1 283 706 hectares. This park is 260 km from Newman and is considered to be one of the most remote places in the world. Visitors to this park must bring their own supplies of water, food, and petrol. No supplies will be provided by the mining companies or the Aboriginal communities. There is no signage, no ranger services, and no camping or picnic facilities. You have been warned. Having said that, many well prepared and intrepid travellers do visit this park known for its stunning scenery, rivers and lakes and wildlife. It is also a popular site for photographers. This park is rich in Aboriginal culture. Opthalmia Dam is north east of Newman and is a great place for a picnic, bbq, swim, or sailing a oat, although no power boats are allowed. This dam was completed in 1981 and holds 30 million cubic metre of water, covering 16 squared km. This dam is used to recharge the underground aquifers that provide Newman's water supply. The turn off for the dam is out along the Marble Bar Rd. Newman Visitors Centre allows the visitor to appreciate the surrounding environment of Newman and the Pilbara. The visitor centre is constructed from rammed earth with a large leadlight window featuring the surrounding landscape. The Newman Visitor Centre has interpretative displays, an art gallery, and an outdoor mining museum. There is also a Mining and Pastoral Museum and Interpretive Garden at the rear of the centre which showcases early mining machinery from the early 1900's. The gift shop has locally made products including wood, glass and ceramic wares. Marble Bar and Nullagine. 189 km north of Newman is the town of Nullagine, lying on the Nullagine River. There are plenty of water holes around here to cool off in. Another 120 km north along a well maintained gravel road is Marble Bar, famous for being the hottest town in australia. Apart from being hot, Marble Bar has Chinaman's Pool, Corunna Downs, the Pioneer War Memorial, Poinciana House, and the invisible WW11 airbase that are all worth a visit.
