New Plymouth Attractions - Things to do
Pukekura Park is located in the centre of new Plymouth city and is a world famous 52 hectare park. The park contains a huge range of varying landscapes along with formal gardens, plant collections, lakes, exotic specimen trees, and walking trails. The park is also famous for the Fernery and Display Houses. Pukekura Park is the home for the yearly TSB Festival of Lights, held from the middle of December to early February. The main gate of the park is located at Fillis St, but there are 22 entrances allowing for pedestrian access from all sides of the gardens. Vehicular access is available from Fillis St, Victoria Rd, and Gover St. The gardens are open from 7.30 am to 7 pm. and open an extra hour in daylight savings. The gallery is also currently home to the collection of kinetic sculptor and modern filmmaker Len Lye, although Lye's collection will eventually be housed in a custom built gallery next door. The gallery seeks to be recognised internationally for its special commitment to the Pacific region and is constantly presenting a diverse collection of events and exhibitions. The gallery is open 7 days weekly from 10.30 am to 5 pm. The gallery can be found in Queen St, New Plymouth. The tales are told through a variety of interactive media, attracting all ages and cultures. Puke Ariki is an architecturally award winning building that is built on the foreshore and is a very distinctive building that has become a city landmark. Puke Ariki is in Ariki St, New Plymouth and is open 7 days a week. Opening every day at 9am, and closing at 6 pm every week day except Wednesday which closes at 9pm. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays it closes at 5pm. URL: http://www.pukeariki.com/en/ Mount Taranaki is also known as Mount Egmont and is located just a 20 minute drive from the city centre. This mountain provides varied outdoor activities like skiing, snowboarding, alpine tramping, photography, and mountain climbing. Those considering climbing will need specialist equipment, adequate planning and experience, as climbers have been killed on the slopes. Mount Taranaki has a wide variety of plant life from sub alpine herbs to sub-tropical semi coastal forests.
