Duomo
The plain exterior of the Duomo, and its location in a small side street do nothing to prepare you for the magnificence within. The interior of the Duomo is alive with frescoes, gilding and paintings, and Greek and Roman walls, columns, and roads can be seen in the archeological area, along with early Christian mosaics. The relics of the patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro, are housed in a chapel o the side of the Duomo. His skull is contained within a silver bust, and there are two vials of his blood which are used to predict the fate of Naples each year.

Pompeii
Pompeii was a small Roman town that was completely overwhelmed by molten lava during the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. This has led to the almost perfect preservation of buildings, frescoes, and monuments. There are even cement casts of the inhabitants of Pompeii that didn’t escape, made using the voids left in the lava when their bodies decomposed. Pompeii can get crowded in the summer, particularly in the morning, and if you want to see inside some of the houses you need to book in advance.

Napoli Sotteranea
Around thirty five metres below street level there are tunnels, chambers, and aqueducts that date back to the original Greek city of Neapolis, and were built during the fourth century BC. This complex system became part of Naples water supply, but use was discontinued after the nineteenth century cholera epidemic. A nienty minute guided tour takes in just one kilometre of over four hundred kilometres of tunnels.
